Soren’s memorandum on the first course

2891 · public reading copy

The founding Commandant allocates the Academy’s single lecture room and two simulation bays.

To the instructors

The lecture room is to be shared. Fleet instruction may not occupy it for an entire watch while the civil students wait in the passage. Each instructor will leave the board legible and the next exercise brief at the desk. The two simulation bays are to be booked separately; a reservation of one is not a claim upon both.

The first exercise

All candidates will work the same movement problem before separating into their intended duties. One party prepares the departure, another receives the vessel and the third examines the difference between the two accounts. Exchange those duties on the second attempt. An officer who has never received a late or incomplete order is poorly prepared to issue one.

Examination

Send me the work of each candidate, including the attempt that required correction. I cannot recommend a person on the strength of a clean final sheet if the instructor cannot explain how it was reached. Recommendations will be written separately from appointments, as required by the opening register.
