Publication and delivery
This course is published for study. Publication does not confirm an available class, appointed instructor or completed practical validation. Before booking, obtain a session brief naming the organiser, instructor and assessor, equipment access and any independent review arrangements.
Before live assessment, the organiser must record the current LIVE build, validation date, ship and equipment used, tasks checked and any known limitations. If a required mechanic is unavailable, defer the affected assessment rather than certify an unobserved outcome. A material game update calls for a check of affected tasks, not cancellation of earlier academic achievements.
Your brief
For exercise facilitators preparing Lex Astra practical sessions.
One instructor cannot assess four radio handovers at once. Run them in turn so each learner can be heard, corrected and given another attempt.
The observer cannot hear the handover
Practice case · ED 210 · 2956 teaching edition
- The objective is an acknowledged destination-change handover.
- Four candidates are planned to hand over simultaneously; only one evaluator is available.
- A draft script adds an unrelated contact event during the read-back.

Technical knowledge and game skills
Practical instruction revision 1 · 9 October 2026
Build controlled exercises in a changing game
Pilot the environment
Test the intended ship, site, contract sharing, tools and recovery route with the build that will be used. Choose a quiet location or suitable Arena Commander mode for handling and weapons drills. Avoid using uninvolved players as surprise targets or obstacles. Prepare a fallback if the site becomes occupied or its access changes.
Inject one decision-relevant change
Use a message, a simulated unavailable receiver or a reversible tested configuration to create the required decision. Do not cause an uncontrolled injury or ship fire merely for drama. Release the inject only after the learner establishes the baseline action, and tell evaluators which indication and response they must observe.
Reset and compare attempts
Restore fuel, equipment, inventory and starting positions as required, then check that the next candidate receives a comparable task. Record environmental differences such as visibility or broken interaction prompts. After the pilot, revise confusing messages and inaccessible observation positions before blaming learners for inconsistent performance.
Practical drill
Design and pilot a cancelled approach, blocked cargo reception or medical-destination change. Show the baseline, inject trigger, evaluator viewpoint, safe reset and fallback for a game interruption.
Observed-skill checks
- The environment and reset are tested before assessment.
- The inject exposes the intended skill without introducing an uncontrolled hazard.
- Candidate difficulty and evaluator access remain comparable across attempts.
Use these checks to document the technical evidence supporting the course outcomes in your agreed role. Record what you personally performed, what assistance you needed and what remains unobserved. A discussion or simulated action does not certify live equipment handling; Crew Support evidence does not confer Pilot qualification.
Game references and build-sensitive details
The linked pages were read for this revision. Community references mix release eras; each source note identifies what is used and what is excluded. Technical explanations below are an Academy synthesis, and drills and performance checks are Academy-designed. Before practice, compare the named actions with the installed LIVE build and actual equipment. Bind actions by name rather than copying old default keys. Research is not an in-game validation.
- Star Citizen Wiki — Controls
Control categories, movement axes and targeting concepts. The page contains legacy bindings and flight-system descriptions; use the installed game’s bindings, not its key table.
- Star Citizen Wiki — Defend Occupants
A specific lawful bunker mission, shared access, allied NPCs and friendly-fire consequences. Other contracts have different conditions. Squad drills below are Academy teaching methods, not claimed game rules.
- Star Citizen Wiki — Medical
Body-part injuries, Hemozal, symptom medication, BDL, bed tiers and regeneration. Ship tables, resource costs and ranges change; inspect the actual bed and tool.
- Star Citizen Wiki — Engineering
Engineering terminals, components, fuses, heat and fires. This community overview is incomplete; verify each interaction and vessel’s support in the session.
- RSI — Official patch notes
Primary release index for the instructor’s build check, not evidence that a particular interaction has been tested by the Academy.
Check the official LIVE release notes and record the session build, equipment and observed limitations before practical sign-off.
Learn the method
1. Design from the outcome
Choose the decision or action you need to see, then build a situation that requires it. Give each planned change a purpose. An unrelated crisis may be exciting but can hide the very action the exercise was meant to reveal.
For every event, identify the learner decision it is intended to expose, the information needed to make that decision and the evidence the evaluator will record. Remove events that add drama without serving an outcome. A smaller exercise with clear observation can support a stronger judgment than an elaborate scenario no assessor can follow.
- Practise
- Map each event to a taught outcome.
- Ready when
- Every event has a relevant purpose and a specific observable response.
2. Introduce one controlled change
Brief roles, boundaries, stop requests and reset arrangements. Wait until the baseline task has been observed before changing the condition. Keep the change within the taught scope rather than springing a punitive surprise.
Prepare the change as a controlled message: issuer, release condition, content and intended recipient. State what the facilitator does if the baseline has not yet occurred or a genuine technical interruption intervenes. This keeps two candidates’ attempts comparable without forcing identical responses to circumstances that actually differ.
- Practise
- Run a pilot with one planned change.
- Ready when
- Participants know the limits and the evaluator can observe the intended response.
3. Improve the exercise as well as the learner
Ask which outcomes were actually visible. Separate a learner gap from an overlarge group, unclear prompt or failed tool. Assign a correction and describe how the next pilot will show whether it worked.
Evaluate the exercise design separately from the learner. If several candidates misunderstand the same prompt, inspect the prompt before prescribing more practice. Assign an improvement owner and a check in the next pilot, such as confirming that the evaluator can hear every handover after the group is divided.
- Practise
- Write the evaluator’s improvement note.
- Ready when
- Each issue has evidence, an owner and a practical check for the correction.
A worked decision
A destination change tests read-back. The facilitator omits an unrelated attack because it would prevent the observer from hearing the handover.
- Map the destination change to the handover criterion and remove the unrelated contact event from this drill.
- Stagger the handovers or reduce the group so each candidate can be heard. Assign an independent stop role.
- Pilot one baseline handover and then the change. Record whether the evaluator saw the intended evidence and adjust the design before assessment use.
Try it yourself
Produce a one-change run sheet, facilitate a pilot and write an improvement action based on the evaluator’s actual coverage.
What changes during the exercise
The evaluator cannot observe every candidate in the proposed group.
Keep this record

- Candidate order / evaluator coverage / stop and reset roles
- Pilot evidence / design problem / correction and next check
Plain-text worksheet with this case, your working fields and the assessment criteria. Fill it in privately; downloading does not submit work or record completion.
Check your reasoning
What should you change when an observer misses two candidates’ handovers?
Compare your reasoning
Have those two candidates repeat their handovers, one at a time, or assign another instructor to listen. Assess what each person says and does; another crew member’s correct reply cannot stand in for theirs.
Answer first, then compare. In a later session, explain the decision using a changed case without referring to this answer.
How completion is judged
A pilot exercise, event-to-outcome list and improvement actions.
The assessor checks your own work against all three “Ready when” criteria above. Use the observed-skill checks in the technical chapter to establish the applicable game-handling evidence in your agreed role. A successful team result does not replace an action they did not observe.
Findings, another attempt and review
- Demonstrated
- Your observed work meets the criterion in the agreed role.
- Further practice required
- The assessor identifies the observed gap and the specific practice needed.
- Interrupted
- Equipment, staffing or personal circumstances prevented a valid assessment. This is not a failure.
- Not assessed
- There is not yet enough evidence for this outcome.
A fresh attempt
Use an evaluator connection loss during the pilot. Pause or reschedule the unobserved outcome instead of inventing a result.
Reassess the missing outcome, plus any linked skill that needs new evidence. For prior learning, compare existing work with the same criteria and observe any missing practical action.
Ask for the reasons behind a finding. Reviews must be handled by someone independent of the original decision; defer the review if that person is not available.

Session setup and coaching
Prepare the session
A pilot team, evaluator, independent stop authority and build check for live work.
Assign crew stations and tell each learner what they will practise. The instructor must be able to hear the calls and see the action being assessed. Brief the callsigns, channel, route and expected duration. Replace the example locations with the places you will actually use.
- Ask the learner to explain the relevant earlier procedure without notes; correct any gap before the practical.
- Teach and demonstrate the technical chapter using the actual game indications. Run its drill with feedback before connecting those skills to the three methods and worked decision. Use the observed-skill checks to identify missing handling evidence.
- Let the learner complete the normal procedure first, then introduce the change described in the exercise. Give them time to respond without coaching. Keep unrelated failures out of this attempt.
- Record the learner's action against each criterion. Give one specific next step for any gap and transfer unfinished operational work before closing.
What to watch for in ED 210
Do not let “harder” substitute for “better observed.” Ask which criterion each extra event serves.
If another attempt is needed
Use an evaluator connection loss during the pilot. Pause or reschedule the unobserved outcome instead of inventing a result.
Running the exercise
Before the crew assembles, try the exercise in the ship you intend to use. Check station access, equipment and the route. Brief the crew on any faults that affect the task. If a bug prevents someone completing it, repeat that part once it works; do not record a failure for a broken mechanic.
Brief the command “Stop exercise” before starting. On that call, cease the drill and tell the instructor what needs attention. For weapons practice, identify the participating ships and crew; anyone else entering the area is a reason to hold fire.
Session administration: use player handles in your notes. Ask before recording voice or video, and agree when the recording will be deleted. Academy rules and review procedure.
