FD 199 / Common Foundation

Foundation watch assessment

Run a short watch from briefing through a changed destination, relief and debrief.

Publication and delivery

This course is published for study. Publication does not confirm an available class, appointed instructor or completed practical validation. Before booking, obtain a session brief naming the organiser, instructor and assessor, equipment access and any independent review arrangements.

Before live assessment, the organiser must record the current LIVE build, validation date, ship and equipment used, tasks checked and any known limitations. If a required mechanic is unavailable, defer the affected assessment rather than certify an unobserved outcome. A material game update calls for a check of affected tasks, not cancellation of earlier academic achievements.

Your brief

For foundation candidates combining their earlier crew skills.

Lex Astra’s first integrated watch asks whether another crew can continue from the candidate’s record without the instructor repairing it.

The first independent relief

Practice case · FD 199 · 2956 teaching edition

  • The brief lists a destination, alternate and four crew tasks.
  • Recovery is listed but no person has accepted it.
  • The destination changes when the incoming watch arrives. The candidate keeps their FD 110 role.
Before you begin: entry and equipment

Bring or arrange

A crew, observer, tested route and backup communications.

The organizer must confirm equipment access before booking. No ship purchase, pledge tier or donation is required.

Technical knowledge and game skills

Practical instruction revision 1 · 9 October 2026

An integrated foundation sortie

Set up a complete movement

Prepare one short trip with a known landing site, a nearby alternate and a two-person ground movement at arrival. Each participant demonstrates equipped protection and access to their assigned station. The pilot demonstrates the stopping check away from traffic; support verifies route and receiving access. A spoken “ready” is followed by the relevant observable action.

Connect flight and ground skills

At arrival, verify the ship is settled before releasing passengers. Move the ground pair using the movement-and-observation sequence from FD 130, with a confirmed return route to the ship. On a cancelled pickup, the pair returns to cover while the pilot selects the alternate. Nobody runs after a moving ramp or assumes the aircraft has seen the ground team.

Recover the whole crew

Use a simulated injury report to require inspection of the medical display and a transport decision without deliberately harming a student. Count those aboard, confirm the returning flight mode and complete the landing. During relief, demonstrate the actual state of the station and accessible equipment, not just the intended configuration from the first brief.

Practical drill

Run departure, transit, landing, paired ground movement and recovery with one cancelled pickup. Assess in the FD 110 role already recorded; a support candidate does not acquire Pilot credit from a shared flight.

Observed-skill checks

  • Each candidate performs the relevant readiness and movement actions personally.
  • The pickup change leaves the ground pair covered and the pilot with a clear next destination.
  • Every person and outstanding equipment limitation is accounted for at relief.

Use these checks to document the technical evidence supporting the course outcomes in your agreed role. Record what you personally performed, what assistance you needed and what remains unobserved. A discussion or simulated action does not certify live equipment handling; Crew Support evidence does not confer Pilot qualification.

Game references and build-sensitive details

The linked pages were read for this revision. Community references mix release eras; each source note identifies what is used and what is excluded. Technical explanations below are an Academy synthesis, and drills and performance checks are Academy-designed. Before practice, compare the named actions with the installed LIVE build and actual equipment. Bind actions by name rather than copying old default keys. Research is not an in-game validation.

  • Star Citizen Wiki — Controls

Control categories, movement axes and targeting concepts. The page contains legacy bindings and flight-system descriptions; use the installed game’s bindings, not its key table.

  • Star Citizen Wiki — Quantum drive

Spooling, calibration, obstructions, orbital markers and interdiction. Its proposed quantum-boosting section is not used as a live procedure.

  • Star Citizen Wiki — Medical

Body-part injuries, Hemozal, symptom medication, BDL, bed tiers and regeneration. Ship tables, resource costs and ranges change; inspect the actual bed and tool.

  • Star Citizen Wiki — Defend Occupants

A specific lawful bunker mission, shared access, allied NPCs and friendly-fire consequences. Other contracts have different conditions. Squad drills below are Academy teaching methods, not claimed game rules.

Check the official LIVE release notes and record the session build, equipment and observed limitations before practical sign-off.

Learn the method

1. Connect the separate checks

Combine the route, crew tasks, communication method and recovery plan in one brief. Check that the same names and destinations appear throughout. A complete set of forms is not enough if no one has accepted the recovery task.

Conduct the brief as a cross-check between people, not a reading of completed boxes. Ask the navigator to identify the alternate, the receiver to explain acceptance and the recovery owner to state their first action after a failure. A contradiction discovered here is a planning correction, not something to hide from the assessor.

Practise
Find and repair an unassigned task in the watch brief.
Ready when
The final brief assigns every essential task and the crew can explain the recovery plan.

2. Respond in your trained role

Use the Pilot or Crew Support role recorded in FD 110. When the destination changes, check the route, tell the affected crew and confirm the receiver. The assessor observes your decisions, not just the vessel’s eventual arrival.

At the changed condition, state what remains valid as well as what changes. The crew may retain its callsigns and role allocation while replacing the destination and arrival estimate. This keeps a small amendment from becoming a confused restart and shows that the candidate understands the dependencies in the original brief.

Practise
Carry out the movement and respond to a diversion.
Ready when
You complete your own role’s actions and obtain acknowledgement of the change.

3. Leave the next watch a usable record

Give the next watch the current plan and unfinished work. Correct an inaccurate entry by noting what changed and why, rather than deleting it without explanation. Finish by naming one improvement for the next watch.

Debrief in sequence: intended action, observed action, consequence and next improvement. Choose something another watch can implement, such as requiring a receiving acknowledgement before departure. “Be more careful” cannot be checked; a defined change can be rehearsed and compared with the next watch’s performance.

Practise
Hand over and correct one log discrepancy.
Ready when
The receiver accepts the open work and the correction preserves the earlier entry and reason.

A worked decision

A candidate cancels the approach at the agreed limit and hands over the alternate route. The mission remains incomplete, but the observer has evidence of sound judgment.

  1. Find the unassigned recovery task before departure, obtain an owner and update the shared brief.
  2. Carry out the role-specific movement. On the change, confirm the alternate and give the incoming watch the current instruction.
  3. Correct the old destination entry with a reason and preserve it as the earlier plan. Ask the incoming watch to state its next check without prompting.

Try it yourself

Complete the brief, changed movement and relief. Submit only the actions and decisions you personally performed, alongside the shared crew record.

What changes during the exercise

The destination changes just as the next watch takes over.

Keep this record

  • Assigned role / accepted task owners / recovery contact
  • Changed condition / individual decision / acknowledgement
  • Original entry / correction and reason / relief acceptance

Check your reasoning

Everyone arrived. What does the assessor still need?

Compare your reasoning

Evidence of each candidate’s own briefing, response and handover. A team result cannot fill a gap in individual observation.

Answer first, then compare. In a later session, explain the decision using a changed case without referring to this answer.

How completion is judged

Individual observations, a role-labelled flight log and a corrected handover.

The assessor checks your own work against all three “Ready when” criteria above. Use the observed-skill checks in the technical chapter to establish the applicable game-handling evidence in your agreed role. A successful team result does not replace an action they did not observe.

Findings, another attempt and review
Demonstrated
Your observed work meets the criterion in the agreed role.
Further practice required
The assessor identifies the observed gap and the specific practice needed.
Interrupted
Equipment, staffing or personal circumstances prevented a valid assessment. This is not a failure.
Not assessed
There is not yet enough evidence for this outcome.

A fresh attempt

Change the receiver’s availability instead of the destination. Reobserve the missed skill while preserving the candidate’s role.

Reassess the missing outcome, plus any linked skill that needs new evidence. For prior learning, compare existing work with the same criteria and observe any missing practical action.

Ask for the reasons behind a finding. Reviews must be handled by someone independent of the original decision; defer the review if that person is not available.

Session setup and coaching

Prepare the session

A crew, observer, tested route and backup communications.

Assign crew stations and tell each learner what they will practise. The instructor must be able to hear the calls and see the action being assessed. Brief the callsigns, channel, route and expected duration. Replace the example locations with the places you will actually use.

  1. Ask the learner to explain the relevant earlier procedure without notes; correct any gap before the practical.
  2. Teach and demonstrate the technical chapter using the actual game indications. Run its drill with feedback before connecting those skills to the three methods and worked decision. Use the observed-skill checks to identify missing handling evidence.
  3. Let the learner complete the normal procedure first, then introduce the change described in the exercise. Give them time to respond without coaching. Keep unrelated failures out of this attempt.
  4. Record the learner's action against each criterion. Give one specific next step for any gap and transfer unfinished operational work before closing.

What to watch for in FD 199

Allow clarifying questions, but do not supply the next decision. If the team succeeds while the candidate stays silent, individual evidence is still missing.

If another attempt is needed

Change the receiver’s availability instead of the destination. Reobserve the missed skill while preserving the candidate’s role.

Running the exercise

Before the crew assembles, try the exercise in the ship you intend to use. Check station access, equipment and the route. Brief the crew on any faults that affect the task. If a bug prevents someone completing it, repeat that part once it works; do not record a failure for a broken mechanic.

Brief the command “Stop exercise” before starting. On that call, cease the drill and tell the instructor what needs attention. For weapons practice, identify the participating ships and crew; anyone else entering the area is a reason to hold fire.

Session administration: use player handles in your notes. Ask before recording voice or video, and agree when the recording will be deleted. Academy rules and review procedure.
