A letter to Anna

Personal letter · Heinrich Neuhaus · family correspondence

Krefeld, den 18. November 1943

Liebe Anna,

Dear Anna,

Your letter from Sunday arrived yesterday. I read it twice straight away. I am glad Mother is able to get up again. Please tell her not to fetch the firewood herself. There is still enough wood to last until the end of the month, isn’t there?

You ask about Christmas. I cannot promise you anything yet. Do not put anything aside for me; if I come, we will find something. The woollen socks arrived. The seam on the left one is a little thick, but they are warm.

About the woman with the two children: if you can, give her the grey blanket from my chest. Mother needs the good one herself. Do not wait to ask me again. Just let me know whether the three of them are still staying with you.

It gets dark early here. This is my second start on the letter; I had to go back to the orderly room earlier. The matter of the return is not settled yet. I have asked for a fresh list. I cannot write you any more about it.

Give Mother my love. And write again soon, even if it is only a few lines.

P.S. The little photograph of you was still tucked between the letters after all. I found it.

Your Heinrich
